How it all started
Owner and stylist Lisa Megumi Rogers opened Megumi Organic Salon after experiencing a life changing allergic reaction to the cosmetic chemicals para-phenylenediamine (PPD), propylene glycol, and formaldehyde (three common toxic ingredients found in hair dye). Having worked as a hair stylist for many years, she was exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis, and the sudden allergic reaction took her by surprise. After learning more about the dangers associated with chemical processing, as well as the toxins found in cosmetics, Lisa realized something needed to change.
Lisa began researching safer alternatives, but was disappointed to discover that the many so-called “organic” and “natural” products were anything but organic and natural. It was then that Lisa found henna, an ancient coloring method with a long, rich, and most importantly, safe history. Since opening the salon, Lisa has continued to expand her knowledge of plant-based hair care and to educate her clients on the dangers of the chemicals we are all exposed to in daily life.
You will notice the difference between our salon and others from the minute you walk through our door. Instead of being assaulted by the harsh smell of chemicals and artificial fragrances, all you will notice is clean, fresh air (and the naturally earthy smell of henna if we are in the middle of an application!). Our pure henna and other plant colors are mixed daily at the salon to create personalized results unique to your hair. We also use the John Masters Organics line of hair products, so you can feel safe knowing you and your hair are receiving the best possible care.
We are very proud to be Hawaii’s first and only green salon. We worked hard to make this space our own without the toxic chemicals traditionally used in remodeled spaces. We painted the walls ourselves with VOC-free paint and even used non-toxic flooring materials. Recycling is important to us. And to that effect, 85% of our furnishings were repurposed from places like Re-use Hawaii.
